XIXA @ Hafen2, Offenbach, 18.10.2025.

What a blast!

Imaju papaju i limun
Imaju sladoled na štapiću
Imaju i jagode i kokos

--------- English :) -------------

On last Saturday evening I listened to mystical psychedelic rock from Arizona, with a lot of folklore and cumbia - XIXA, in the dear club Hafen2. It reads chicha, yes, yes, like that chicha morada that Basti and I told everyone about after returning from Peru! Chicha is a beer made from purple corn, but we actually loved and drank chicha morada - purple corn juice boiled with pineapple skins and some spices (I felt cloves, I think). But chicha** (Cumbia Peruana) is also a type of music from Peru, which combines Peruvian folklore from the Andes, cumbia (which comes originally from Colombia) and psychedelia, while this band gives its somewhat darker and desert version of the same. I'm sorry I only listened to them for the first time this year (thanks Hafen2!) - the band has several albums and EPs behind them and with selected songs from them they are currently promoting their last album Xolo, which tells about the mystical journey of one person accompanied by a dog (El Cholo, a hairless dog typical of Mexico (and in general the whole of South America)), a mythical companion of souls on a journey through the Mayan/Aztec underworld. The songs are in Spanish and English; playful, dancing and sometimes dark. It's also a pleasure to watch the foursome in front of us: in the front row there's Brian Lopez in a glittery shirt (my kids especially approve and want one) and Gabriel Sullivan who take turns on acoustic and electric guitars and vocals in a wide range (and who, as I later read, are members of both the bands Calexico and Giant Sand), while behind them are bassist Hickit Korbel and drummer Winston Watson. All this provides a lot of variation within the songs and makes them very seductive. I have to praise the small audience who, although German, could not resist and we all danced and surrendered to the mercy of the band. Until the next viewing, here are some brief memories from the evening.

**We had the opportunity to hear many chicha-songs in the streets, bars and, most of all, while we were driving in vans and other public transport in the Peruvian countryside. It's a bit hard to resist them, so I've probably been somewhat infected with sounds from Peru and South America in general since then. Afterwards, with the Shika Shika collective, I discovered a lot of cumbia artists/groups that I still listen to relatively often.
